Jackie Calmes, who’s leaving Wall Street Journal for the New York Times admits the irony that this presidential election — compared with the previous four she’d covered there since 1990 — has resulted in far more front page stories carrying byline.
Months before purchasing the Journal, Rupert Murdoch said publicly that he wanted the paper to increase its focus on politics and Washington coverage. And since taking over, and installing Robert Thomson as editor, that shift is apparent to anyone anyone scanning A1 (or conducting journalism studies).
So why leave now? Of course, the defection of any veteran Journal reporter these days begs the same question about the new regime.
“This has nothing to do with Rupert Murdoch, Robert Thomson, or the Journal,” Calmes said this afternoon.
