Low morale at the LA Times

Whether they jumped or were pushed out because of calls from up high to make drastic newsroom cuts, the past three editors of the Los Angeles Times — John Carroll, Dean Baquet, and Jim O’Shea — each walked out the door over the past three years, before making such cutbacks.

So Russ Stanton knew exactly what might happen when he took over the job in February. And now he’ll have to be the one running a newsroom after yesterday’s announcement that 150 jobs were to be eliminated, as the paper sheds 15 pages in the process.

Today, in an interview with the NY Times, Stanton stated the obvious: “As you might expect, morale is pretty low right now, but we’re trying to keep people focused, and we continue to crank out a great paper every day,”
