It’s like something out of a Hollywood script: You go to the polls on Election Day, vote–but thanks to an electronic voting machine malfunction–your vote doesn’t count. Members of the Senate Rules Committee want to make sure this scenario never happens.
They’re working on a bill that requires electronic voting equipment to produce documentation of every vote cast. This allows states to verify that the electronic tallies match with the actual ballot numbers. Lawmakers also want to require state audits after elections–but critics argue this would be too expensive and should only be used when the race is close.
Democrats and Republicans are working together to try and push the bill through Congress.
