HBO to air Pelosi daughter’s doc

Alexandra Pelosi, whose 2002 documentary about George W. Bush helped humanize the president early on in his administration, is wrapping up work on a new project for HBO dealing with the 2008 election, said a source at the pay cable channel.

“We’re going to see something in a couple of weeks, either a rough cut or some snippets of footage,” said the HBO insider. “We sent her out to shoot, but we’re not sure yet what she’s coming back with.”

Pelosi, who is the daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was a producer for NBC News when she used a handheld video camera to shoot “Journeys With George,” a cinéma vérité look at then-candidate Bush during the 2000 race. The documentary won critical raves and six Emmy nominations. This time around, she’s using more sophisticated hi-def equipment and has been following several candidates on the campaign trail, attending the political conventions in Denver and St. Paul, Minn.

While word around St. Paul (and, earlier, in Fox News’ 411 column) was that Pelosi was shooting a biopic about John McCain, those familiar with the project insist it’s not about a single candidate. “To call it a McCain documentary isn’t correct,” said the HBO-er. “It’s more accurate to say it’s a film about the election process.”

Indeed, Pelosi-spotters saw her in several places unlikely to be included in a film about McCain, including the “Oasis” tent at the Democratic National Convention. There, Pelosi was seen filming Arianna Huffington and the New York Times’ David Carr.

Last year, before the primaries heated up, Pelosi attempted a documentary about Hillary Rodham Clinton but found her to be even more distant than W. “Hillary’s tough to get good access to," HBO’s doc division chief Sheila Nevins told New York magazine. "[Alexandra] Pelosi tried. But I don’t think she got in the door.” Instead she opted for a major production of a different type, giving birth to her second child, Thomas, in December.

Still, in these times when most documentaries are suffering a sad death at the box-office, it’s nice to have friends at HBO. Pelosi’s company, Purple Monkey Productions, signed a two-year exclusive deal with the cable company in 2005 that yielded two projects, including “Diary of a Political Tourist,” a 2004 campaign doc that played about as stiff as you might expect for an 82-minute road movie starring Sens. John F. Kerry and Joseph I. Lieberman. Far better received was a documentary about the religious right titled “Friends of God.” Premiering in January 2007, just a few months after the Ted Haggard scandal broke, it included several scary scenes of the preacher discussing his sexual prowess. (Haggard left his evangelical church when he admitted to scoring meth from a gay hooker and indulging in what he called “sexual immorality.”)

After “Friends of God,” rumors circulated that Pelosi was using more explosive outtakes of Haggard material as well as newer interviews to create an entirely different documentary about the pastor who fell from grace. HBO execs were coy about the Haggard sequel or, for that matter, revealing any other details about Pelosi’s filming expeditions.

“Given her track record and her relationship with us, it’s not unheard of” to allow her an open-ended, carte blanche development deal, especially considering the low costs allotted to documentaries, said the HBO insider. “We don’t know what her film will be. She goes out shooting a bunch of things, and we’re not sure what she’ll come back with.”
